Lotus Notes 8.5 Crashes when opening a audio attachment.

We are running lotus notes 8.5 (client) and the most current Domino server. We use a Toshiba phone system with Stragegy VoiceMail. The voice mail system sends voice mail messages in a WAV form via email attachment. This attachement is played by Windows Media Player 9.0, and requires a Toshiba codec.

Some users click on the attached file, select open, and Lotus Notes crashes if the message came from an unknown sender. The user can save the file and open it detached, but this is not functional due the volume of calls this mailbox recieves.

All calls with caller ID tags open without issue...

Thanks for any advice in advance!

PS. We have also adjusted the number that is displayed when an unknown caller calls in. This does not resolve the issue.

Besides a client reinstall, I would suggest contacting IBM, since this type of issue is extremely specific to your environment.

Does this happen to all users ?

compare settings, user profiles etc if it works OK for some but not others.

hijackthis ver 2 and winmsd may help find differences.

I hope this helps !

IBM BLAMES TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA BLAMES IBM - REINSTALL DID NOT RESOLVE ISSUE

Does this happen to all users ?

NO, RANDOM USERS BUT REPEDITIVE ONCE THEY START

compare settings, user profiles etc if it works OK for some but not others.

ALL USERS SHARE THE SAME RIGHTS AND SETTINGS AS THOSE UNAFFECTED

hijackthis ver 2 and winmsd may help find differences.

I hope this helps !
EVERY POST HELPS, AND I APPRECIATE THEM ALL

   Hi there Majo2469,,,

I would like to get some info to isolate the reaosn why this problem happens .
Q. you mentioned >>>and Lotus Notes crashes if the message came from an unknown sender<<<
So,, if the message comes from a "known sender" does the user face the same problem ... please try to get a message which crashed a users LN resent by a know user and check if LN will crach or not .

Q2. Do these users  experience the same issue with  WAV form attachements generally ??? or with any other type or size of attachements e.g. AVI  1 MB etc.

Q3.  Did you check the RAM , CPU , of these users ??? Do they have such a sufficient RAM and CPUs.???

Q4. If these users use windows OS did you check if you are getting an error message in the "event viewer"??? Could you try to open one of these troubling attachment on any user's PC and check what is going on ,, on the "Task Manager"

Best Wishes

Usually it's very difficult to find the guilty application, it sometimes just is the combination of elements. Did you try with different elements: changing the codec, the player, the mail client, other DLLs or so?

You could install Winamp, for example, on some PCs, and ask the users to use it instead of the M$ Media Player (which I am not too fond of anyway). Or some other player, like RealPlayer. Take your pick here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_media_players

I recieved a call from IBM Domino support - This is due to the client being unalbe to find the file specfied. They currently have no workaround. We have decided to migrate to Exchange.

Soultion: Get out of the dark ages and get on Exchange.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Migrate to Exchange? What if there's some weird glitch in the Windows registry or somewhere else in that no-so-perfect Operating System? Sorry, but I hope you're not going to ditch one very complete groupware system in favour of just a mail system. I can't believe "they" really told you that "the client is unable to find the file specfied". It might be true, of course, but it seems mighty strange. Did they give you some URL or so, with a description of the issue and that there's no soution (yet)??

Anyway, if Notes is the problem, it's the client only, not the server. Did you try to use Outlook in combination with the Domino server? There are several ways to connect Outlook to a Domino server: IMAP, POP3, and DAMO (Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook). All I would like to ask you is to try with a different mail client.

Or try upgrading to R8.5.1. Or downgrading, the Notes R7.0.3 client is very reliable.

What I'd really, really like to know: is there a PMR or SPR being reported, and if so, with what code or number?

What if I connect you with someone at IBM/Lotus who is VERY willing to get this problem solved, would you be interested??

If you are, please send me a mail, my mail address is in my EE-profile (in the middle somewhere).

While I am grateful for the offer of support we have recieved our Exchange server and it will be active within 1 week.

PERSONAL OPINON: I have used Lotus in the past, and have NEVER been happy with it's performance, and extensive issues. Plus they bury many of the options or causes deep in to system "Documents". I am excited to scrap Domino and move to exchange, like any other company that doesn't have excess time to waste tracking down issues.

I am seriously disappointed reading your conclusion, but I can understand it if you use Domino ONLY for mail. The fact that you're "excited" is a little worrying though... I hope that it means that you're eager to learn something new, and that the decision to move to Exchange is made by your management based on business facts and not on gut-feeling and emotions.

I know that Domino isn't easy to configure, but that's mainly because it is so much more than only a mail system. I assume that most of your personal griefs originate from a combination of factors: you may not have had a good or up-to-date Administrator training, nobody told you how to use the Admin Help database, you may have inherited a poorly configured server, your network could be problematic (those problems won't go away with Exchange!), your users nag all the time (probably for the wrong reasons), and that you knocked on the experts door rather late.

And R8.5 is not such a very good release, R8.5.1 is LOTS and LOTS better. The performance of a Domino mail-server is at least equal but usually much better than an Exchange server.

If you're still a little unprejudiced, here are some (independent) documents that might show you both sides of the coin:
