Find the CD that has the drivers on it & run all the drivers for your system.

Can I ask what model the laptop is?

To reset your Acer to factory defaults, try the following:

- Go Start > All Programs > Acer Empowering Technology > Acer eRecovery Management
- Select "Restore" in the bottom tab
- Select "Restore system to factory default"

Before doing so you might want to try the option "Reinstall applications/drivers". If it's only volume controls, then this should give you the chance to get them working again without losing all your applications and data.

Here's the procedure in detail with images: http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet-2040-acer-pc-restore-to-factory-settings

Have re-installed the OS using the recovery CDs?  Can you see the supporting softwares installed?  Check the funtions key is not set ON, some keys will not funtion when the funtion key is ON, check the led status.

You need to download the corresponding utilities/drivers from the Acer website for your laptop model to get all these keys to function correctly.
