How best to carry out Exchange Server 2003 Backup with NTBackup?

I have seen a number of articles on how to backup Exchange Server 2003 and have been confused on the best method. Someone suggested an online backup (where all the services are still running). Later I found out that that could not be a good solution as the mailboxes were still being written to.

This is a pretty urgent question as I'm not sure I have a clean backup yet.

when you start NTbackup on the exchange server you should be able to see information store, system state and all your drives.

you want to select information store, and system state, on drive c:\ you shoudl unselect the place where you .edb .stm and log files are

it still amazes me why i have to backup ther system drive (c:\). it seems too large to me to be necesary. Please shed more light on this.

I have found the items 1) and 2) and initiated their backup. I'll do a test restore tomorrow.

forget the c:\ you can backup/restore without the c: as long as you don't need to rebuild the server completely.

the c: is to be able to restore the server as such and not only exchange

Hi,
If Exchange Backup is all you are interested in, then you need to use some Exchange Aware Software only and NTBackup is just fine. NO need to look at C: Drive as a whole. Focus on Microsoft Information Store Backup only
