Exchange 2007 Logon Problems & Replication Failure with USN Rollback

Hi all,

I have a major problem with Exchange 2007 SP2 running on Windows 2003 R2.
The Exchange 2007 Installation is a VMware 3.5 guest and was done on a DC (Not the operations master). A week ago  the VM was corrupted and as a result we restored from a backup of the VM with the unintended consequence of an old System State and causing replication to fail. This is also known as USN rollback.

OWA users are unaffected but Outlook client users can no longer logon.

If I run DC promo on this Exchange 2007 SP2 VM and demote it will it fix the problem or just make things worse?

This is why exchange is not supported on a DC

To be honest I have never installed exchange 2007 on a DC but in exchange 2003 DCpromo out the DC used to break exchange totally. so I wouldn't try this in a production environment to start with.

Can you install another exchange and move the mailboxes to it /?

I almost got there!

I set up another EX07 server but it failed installing the mailbox role. It now throws a 4001 error when I try and start the Exchange SA!

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

AKhater - would you recommend demoting this Server to remove the Global catalog?

if your server is now working and it is back acting as a "normal" DC then follow your pursuit in building another exchange and moving the mailboxes to it.

I will do some research if it is same to dcpromo out a DC installed on exchange 2k7. I know for sure on 2k3 it used to break it and exchange 2k7 is not support on a DC it won't even install if it is not in the root forest

A quick search seems to confirm that DCpromo will break exchange 2007 too

I have 2 ideas in mind and the safer is to build another exchange move the mailboxes to it and then uninstall the one on the DC

Hmmm, not having alot of luck there!

In the meantime I need to recover some important email for users. If I can recover the entire Exchange folder from the old server is there any way of getting the mail off?

Hi AKhater,

Thank you very much for your input. I am afraid the situation was unworkable and time was of the essence so we have moved to a hosted Exchange solution. We will be decommisioning (or trying to) the Exchange server in the coming weeks and I would certainly appreciate your input on that topic.

Thanks again!
