Problems with deleted items with IMAP account in Outlook

When I delete an email in Outlook 2007 in my IMAP account the emails are permanently removed. There is not a red strikethrough on deleted items - they are just gone. There have been a number of times I have needed to recover (or have accidentally deleted) an email and cannot. Is there a way to turn the strikethrough option on or any other solutions?

IMAP lets you keep things around after they are deleted.  To remove them completely you have to purge them.

Go to Edit-->Purge deleted emails

You can also hide emails you have deleted but haven't been purged yet by go to View-->Current View-->Hide messages marked for deletion

Hope this helps

Sorry I misread the question but if you follow my second set of instructions only unselect the option to hide them you should be good.

Sorry, I may not have been clear. The deleted emails don't stay around  - When I hit delete they are deleted - no strikethrough or option to purge because they are already gone. Unfortunately there have been a number of times I have accidentally deleted an email and cannot recover it because it is automatically gone once I hit delete.

No problem. i just tried the second option and the "Hide messages marked for deletion" option was not even checked. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure why your messages selected for deletion are not showing if they are not hidden. Another option you can try is to use Outlook's deleted items folder with your Imap account. This way when you choose to delete an item it will move to the deleted items folder until you purge it. I believe this option is located in Tools - Options - Advanced. Check use deleted items folder with imap.

Outlook 07 does have an auto purge option that could be turned on.  Try selecting the folder you want to make the change for ex Inbox, go to Edit-->purge-->Purge Options  and make sure Purge Items when switching folders while online is UNCHECKED.

I do not see an option for using a deleted items folder in the tools section.

The Purge items option was already unchecked.

Thank you for everyone's assistance! The link http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Office_Productivity/Groupware/Outlook/Q_22997498.html regarding gmail accounts solved the problem. I located the deleted items in the All Mail folder - Thank you!
