Exchange 2003 server to server communication

I have two front-end Exchange 2003 servers and four back-end Exchange 2003 servers all in one site.  I know how to ensure communication from Outlook to exchange is encrypted but i can't find information regarding server to server communication.  If an email message is sent from one back-end exchange server to another back-end exchange server, is it encrypted?  Any information on Exchange server to Exchange server communication would be appreciated.

There is a guide here on how to encrypt communication between your exchange servers: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Email_Security_with_Exchange_2003.html

I've seen this article but i'm still unclear as to the communication between two exchange servers in the same domain.  This article tells me how to encrypt communication but doesn't tell me how two exchange servers in send emails between them.
