How do I modify sharepoint perms beyond the builtin groups?

I have set up a training site using the EmployeeTraining.stp template.  This gives me the ability to register for classes and limit seats.  My problem is when anyone part of the vistors security group tries to register for the class, it says access denied because that group cannot add, modify, delete...
Does anyone know how to adjust this in a way where I am not giving everyone contribute rights so that anyone can add/delete calendar items?

Give contribute rights to the specific list only, not the site. Then set the list options so that people can only edit/see their own items (or whatever is appropriate for your requirements). Does that work for you?

at the site level create a new permission level.  site actions, site settings advanced permiisions, settings permission levels, edit permission level.  here you can create a newpermission.  giving the user only add rights.

now in your doc librbary, open the list settings and permiisions for this list actions, edit permissions this will break the inheritence for the site.  youc an now add the users and give them that permission level.

    Hope this helps

The only problem with that solution is it opens the training calendar up to all employees to add/delete/modify entries.  That's what I'm trying to keep locked down while still allowing them to register/unregister for individual classes.

This looks like the right way to go, but it's not working correctly.  I have created a new group called calendar users with add/modify delete rights to lists and view/open on site perms.  Then I added a generic user to that group.  I still cannot register/unregister for classes through the calendar.  Am I not doing this correctly?  Attached are screen shots.

    Assisted Solution

double check the list permissions and make sure they are the same.  well without the delete items checked they wont beable to unreg.

try going to the list breaking inheitence and then adding that user to that group

For "unregister" functionality without giving delete permissions you could add an additional column to the list, something like "Check the box to unregister".  Then you could filter the unregistered ones out of your view.

    Accepted Solution

I found the issue.  It was the perms on the registrations.  Once I gave the new security group modify rights to this, I am able to register/unregister from classess.  As well, I removed any elevated perms to the calendar and the visitors can still register/unregister.
    Thanks for your help!
