Server 2008 doesn't seem focused on flexible back solutions as part of its 'included' structure. It would really be worth looking into the benefits and ROI of a commercial solution.

Also when needing to send an email, look at Blat for script based email sending. Good for use in batch files and you can also attach the backup log.

I haven't created a script to do this, however you can attach a task to the event that Windows puts in its logs.

Go to Event Viewer, Applications and Services Logs, Microsoft, Windows, Backup, Operational.  You'll find here all the logs relating to the Windows Backup software.

Successful backups will have a code of 14.  Right-click 14 event, and select "Attach Task To This Event".  Follow the prompts to have it send an email.

Failed backups will have a code of 19 or maybe 49.  Find one of these and do the same to send an email indicating that the backup failed.

Visit here for a list of Backup event IDs:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734488(WS.10).aspx

Hope this helps!
