DTP is Dynamic Trunking Protocol, it is used to negotiate trunk ports between switches.

VTP is VLAN Trunking Protocol, which is a misleading name. VTP carries VLAN information between switches. It has three modes:

Server - Switches using this mode can change their VLAN database and send updates to other servers and clients.

Clients - Switches using this mode cannot make changes to their database, they will receive and send updates. All changes to the VLAN DB are due to updates from other swithces.

Transparent - Switches in this mode can make changes to their local VLAN DB, they do not make changes based on VTP updates, but they will forward the updates they receive to other switches.

Author Comment:From the DTP link:

<<DTP should not be confused with VTP, as they serve different purposes. VTP communicates VLAN existence information between switches. DTP aids with trunk port establishment. Neither protocol transmits the data frames that trunks carry.>>
