Blackberry with no data plan - use data ONLY on wifi

I have a client who is upgrading their blackberry, but they do not have a data plan. They only have the cheapo 5mb email plan that their cell phone provider offers.

They have an ancient blackberry. One of the old purple ones with the black and white screen and thumb wheel.

When they get a new blackberry, I need to ensure that it has wifi, and that it ONLY uses data while on the wifi. E.g. normal data usage while in the office, but when they leave, all data is shut off until they get back.

Is this possible? If so, which blackberry should I recommend that they get? Preferably on the cheaper/older side.

I would suggest to check with the Service Provider for this before you go for a purchase.
Which carrier does your client use? if it's a GSM carrier then go for either the 8900, 8520 or 9700. All three have wifi (as does the Storm 9520, but the difference in interface and navigation may be too much for the user) and can run in wifi-only mode. Note that the device will need to be activated with a blackberry-enabled sim in it to receive the service books for the first time. However once the service books have been received the user can disable the cellular connection (and leave it disconnected).

Unfortunately there is no IT policy to disable the cellular radio from a central point - however as long as the user doesn't enable it (and leave wifi enabled) then they'll be fine.

We're with Rogers, and honestly you guys know more than they do. The "representatives" on the other end make stuff up when they don't know what they're talking about, can't trust anything they say unless it's absolutely basic.

IT policies doesn't matter, it's just one user and they pay their own cell phone bill, so I can just tell them "don't enable this or your bill will go through the roof". I'm pretty sure they'll be fine.

So provided the blackberry is activated, it will be able to receive email when in Wifi only mode?

as far as I know, in US you cant get a Blackberry without a data plan. You have to have a dataplan in order to buy a blackberry....
Accessing internet WiFi is not considered as a dataplan..
