creating sliding panels in php

There are few navigation items on the home page.
Upon a click - A panel slides into place in the content area beneath the
nav, each panel contains different content, pulled from various content
types on the site.
each panel has a left arrow graphic and a close X graphic, clicking on
the left arrow slides the panel out of site,  it does NOT slide a new panel
in. clicking on the upper right X graphic closes/hides the panel, no
sliding.the URL of the panel needs to change when the panel changes.
I have no clue of how to start with. Can you help me get started with it?
I would really appreciate your help.
