creating sliding panels in php

There are few navigation items on the home page.
Upon a click - A panel slides into place in the content area beneath the
nav, each panel contains different content, pulled from various content
types on the site.
each panel has a left arrow graphic and a close X graphic, clicking on
the left arrow slides the panel out of site,  it does NOT slide a new panel
in. clicking on the upper right X graphic closes/hides the panel, no
sliding.the URL of the panel needs to change when the panel changes.

I have no clue of how to start with. Can you help me get started with it?
I would really appreciate your help.

Sliding panels is not necessarily related to PHP. It's in Javascript. So simply see this examples and put one of them you like in your PHP page outside of php tags:

You may need to download and use jQuery also.
That's all
