There are many tools out there.  As far as free though, you're probably going to have a tough time finding what you want exactly, but you might be able to make due.  I've used wintask, which isn't free, but very cheap and does a good job on most any GUI testing.  AutoIT is the free tool that is probably the best all around free GUI rec/play test tool.  Powershell CPT3 has some good GUI test abilities if you're into scripting.
And if you're into programming, you may try out Watij http://watij.com/

Is there anything specific you will need in the tool?

If you change your mind about the "free" requirement, I have had a great time and success with qf-test.
Google it.

It connects to the java code behind the GUI you are testing,
You can do Anything you want.
It can record, and the best thing, you don't have to know any programming at all.
But if you do, you have a full jython and groovy shells at your disposal.

Squish and GUIdancer don't look free to me.  Am I missing something?  Nice tools from the quick look though.  There's tons of them.  If we could get some specifics, that would help.  "Automated" usually implies record/playback type tools; the first one, UISpec4J (java/swing gui testing), would not qualify.

I'm surprised that there are no that many free, OSS solutions available for automated testing.
