CA ArcServe 12.5 Does not detect Tape.

Fresh CA ArcServe 12.5 installation has a problem.Arcserve device manager doesnt detect Hp StorageWorks Ult. 920 SAS device with p212 controller card. But in the windows device manager and ntbackup there is no problem.Device is working fine.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks

It's been years since I used Arcserve, but if I remember correctly, you have to make sure that during it's installation you select to use Arcserve's drivers and not those of windows. Also make sure you have installed all of Arcserve's SP's and updates.
ARCserve communicates with tape devices via SCSI Pass Through as apposed to a driver.
So if the OS sees it and ARCserve does not something is blocking SCSI Pass Through.

make sure the latest controller driver is installed, update storport.sys from Microsoft.
still problems then if you have a virtual disk program installed try uninstalling it.
still not working then from the manager > quick start > server admin > select the server > configuration > tape engine > set message level to Detail.
stop the tape engine, delete the old tape.log, start the tape engine and then attach the new tape log here.
The p212 is a SmartArray controller, isn't it?  Make sure that it is supported for tape attach, as some of the SmartArray controllers are not. supported for tape attach... see www.hp.com/go/connect for supported connectivity.   Plus, look at the Enterprise Backup Solutions Compatibility Matrix at www.hp.com/go/ebs to make sure that your server, OS, firmware, etc. are a supported combination with ARCserve.

Also,  make sure you don't have Removable Storage running as a Windows service.   It can lead to problems IDing or using tape drives.

the p212 is certified compatible, but I think the storport update is a must.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you say "Arcserve device manager doesnt detect Hp StorageWorks Ult. 920 SAS device", I assume you've run the Device Wizard?

Latest controller and HP tape drivers are installed.Server has all latest updates for Storport.sys.I have disabled HP LTO device from MS device manager and run device wizard from Arc server but there is no change, the problem still continues...
the tape drive must be enabled.
Storport.sys will block communication via SCSI Pass Through for any tape device that is disabled from within the OS Device Manager.

Either contact CA support or supply the tape log as recommended above.
You need to install this

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943545

This is mentioned in their Support Website -> Certified Device List for ARCserve r12.5
It is not that specific hotfix that is needed, what is really needed is an updated storport.sys, and since he said he installed the latest there is no reason to now install an older version.
I found this on CA's website..

https://support.ca.com/phpdocs/0/4536/125/cdls/4536_125_hp_basecdl.html#sashost

inciralti - Can you mention the version of storport.sys that is available on your server ?

Honest to goodness -- if you disable the tape drive in WIndows Device Manager, *it will not be seen by the backup application*.

@ SelfGovern

ARCserve does not require any drivers for the Tape drive / Library when we use a SCSI mini port based driver for the SCSI or HBA card. ARCserve's Tape Engine uses SCSI Commands which are passed down to the controller. Disabling of the tape drive or library is just done to make sure that other 3rd party software does not access it.

But for this scenario, the SAS P212 controller is using a Stor port driver which makes use of storport.sys which requires the devices to be ENABLED in Windows Device Manager. but like mentioned earlier, since arcserve does not require drivers, its best that you install the default MS drivers for the tape drive, and make sure that storport.sys is latest and updated.

@dovidmichel - you have any inputs on this ?

confirm the above &
The HP LTO driver is pretty well behaved so typically it is not a problem, but installing the MS LTO driver has never caused a problem that I'm aware so it is always a safe bet.
Device has been enabled in MS device manager.Storport.sys version=5.2.3790.3959  and detailed log is shown below.Thanks.

[01/12 18:04:21 0b1c  2                   ] SCSI_Get_Inquiry() returns BY_PASS

SCSI Pass Through at the controller level is blocked. At this point it makes no difference if the tape drive is enabled or disabled since it is not even getting far enough to detect it.

OK so since controller driver and storport.sys have been updated the next thing to look at is what might be causing the conflict.

If you have a virtual disk utility such as Magic ISO then uninstall and restart.
If not that then check for any application that might be installing a driver, perhaps for a storage device or management.

This should be displaying data on the controller but due to the above failure it just shows up as a generic CA generated controller.
thank you dovidmicheel, i have installed CA arcserve cumulative update1 but nothing is changed. There is no 3.rd party software which can be causing the conflict.

Hey dovidmichel thank you for your assist.I've installed patch which you said above (kb/950903) and problem is resolved.Arc serve detected hp lto3 device.

have a nice day and thanks again.
Nice work!
thanks.
Just FYI Everyone,
I had this exact problem, I had an LTO4 G3 24 Library with 2 Ultrium 4 drives, going through 1 P212 SAS controller.
No joy - Arcserve 15 would not see the drives or controller  at all.
I downloaded the hotfix (or to be more precise put in my email at the "download hotfix" link in side the

link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943545/en-us

Ran the hot fix and restarted the machine, ALL GOOD!!!

yay!
