can someone please suggest or recommend the kind of spec of desktop i should be looking to buy.

This will just be a home pc and for training purposes.

this is one i've looked at...

 *  Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
    * (2.33GHz, 4MB Cache)
    * Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium
    * 4GB memory
    * 500GB hard drive

thanks in advance.....

Depending on if you can find drivers for the system you can run Windows 2008 server on the system but you must have drivers.

You can purchase a cheap small business server from Dell.

Here are some links to show you people of installed Windows 2008 server as a workstation. I have installed on a workstation but you need to make sure you can get the drivers for the workstation for Windows 2008 server.

If you want to use Hyper-V then you would need to have 64-bit drivers.
