SQL server instance

Hi,

Someone on EE asked me to install ComboFix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)  to check/remove infection in my computer. After installation and running it, my SQL server 2000 is not running anymore. I get the following error message on the start up of my computer:

"SQL server could not find the default instance(MSSQLSERVER) - please specify the name of an existing instance on the invocation of sqlservr.exe
If you believe that your installation is corrupt or has been tampered with, un install then re run set up to correct this problem..."

My .net applications are not working anymore as they can't connect to the database. Is there any fix for this?
Thanks

go to the services and see if SQL Server service is running and If its running go to the enterprise manager and try to connect to it and let me know what happens.

In the services window: there are two options:

MSSQLSERVER  ---------------------------            -----automatic
MSSQLServerOLAPServices ------------started -----automatic

I tried to start te MSSQLSERVER service and while the control service was up trying to start the service, I got the same error message popped up. The service control window tried to restart but the the end I got this message:

Sould not open MSSQLSERVER service on the local computer.
Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I have had this copy of SQL server 2000 for about 6 years and haven't had a problem with it at all. Just mentioning that I have a copy of SQL Server 2005 Express edition on my computer which has been working fine.

Thanks

I guess that combo fix has screwed up the sql server. Do you have valid backups of all the databases? I would recommend go for a reinstallation of the sqlserver.

go to the sql server error log folder and check the errors. Since I faced similar problem a couple of days back and I ended up reinstalling as there was no work around found by me.

I can not access the error log through the EM. looking at the Log folder in MSSQL folder, there are some files but the latest one doesn't tell anything about error.

System log in event viewer: MSSQLSERVER service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 times.

well, here I am.

After several days of struggle, I realized that I have problem with SQL 2005 as well. so today, I uninstalled SQL 2005 and tried to reinstall it that I started to get even scarier error messages and checking online forums, the recommendations were as bad as re installation of OS...
I guess that was the point which I remembered (Thanks God!!!), ComboFix did mention something about system restore point at the time of installation and I did restore it back to prior comboFix installation and SQL server 2k is behaving much better now!!!
I got error message that "your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with( could not find SQLEVN70.RLL)...uninstall and reintall......" but I am happy to see my dbs and apps working....and in no mood to check the error messages or even going through re installation of SQL server 2005  for now!
