End User Internet Connection Monitor - Citrix Environment

I am a Citrix consultant running a project migrating to a new Citrix Xenapp farm for a new customer who has a 4 location MPLS network. The users are unhappy with the performance. The server s are fine working on the LAN. When I ping the Internet and\or the internal addresses of the remote networks, the connection regularly looses packets and can range from 140ms up to 2000ms.

Is anyone aware of a tool I can install that will basically ping one or more addresses and pop up a message when the connection drops to demonstrate the issue to end users?

I use the PTRG utility - http://www.paessler.com/prtg/download - the 10 node freeware version. You can identify and monitor the perimeter interfaces at each of the MPLS-connected sites and watch the traffic flow in real time.

This is not a tool for you to use but a way to help optimize XenApp for your users.  For high latency, make sure Speedscreen Latency Reduction is in use.

You may also want to make sure Speedscreen Image Acceleration is on.

Since you say this is a new farm, start here: http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/xenapp5fp-w2k3/ps-sessions-opt-sess-perf-v3.html

Yes. Speed screen is on. I am mainly battling complete packet loss (2-3 packets) every few minutes. and occaisional high latency. I am responsible for the Citrix farm while another consulting company is responsible for the WAN infrasctructure. I 'd love something that would pop up within a user session indicating the connection has dropped to provide presure to get the wan issues fixed.

We have the same issue with a 3rd party provider. Did you ever find a solution or did it turn up to be an issue with the provider?

Yes. I eventually was able to gain access to the router configs and disovered that there were quality of service rules that preserving too much bandwidth for other services leaving only a small amount for non-prioritized traffic.

Thus packets dropped without the full bandwidth being utilized. Hope that helps.

Let me know if I can help
