SMS Query any computer with a specific file

I need to perform a search to find if any computers have a specific file.  How do I make a query to search all computers for a file name that doesn't exist in the software inventory?

Natively only exe. files are recorded in Software Inventory... you will have to turn on searching for this new file type that you are looking for...

(I'm assuming that its not an exe. file)

So, you have to turn on your site settings to query for more then just exe. file typses... you can specify the file name in the screen shot window... once this is configured, you can then query for computer with this file (and make a collection from it if you want)

can you not make a one time query that doesnt add anything to the inventory?  Our site doesn't have privledges to get the properties of client agents.

I thought you said that the file can not been seen in the database today?

What is the file name that you are looking for?

If the extention for the file is not .EXE, then you will have some trouble because Software Inventory agent by default does not search for anything but exe files.

I guess another way would be to create a custom SMS package (using WISE or VB script, batch file, etc) to search for this file.  Then based on whether it finds the file or not, it will generate a MIF status (normal process of deployment packages to SMS clients).  Advertise this new package to all of your clients on a schedule.  You can then view the mif status report to see if the file was found.

can you not create a query that queries all machines for the file instead of SMS just searching its software inventory database?  You can run a report for "All computers with a specific file" that is what it sounds like you want me to do.  That just queries the database.  I want to make a new query.
one of the files is thumb.dd

thumb.dd or *.dd files are not INVENTORIED by SMS/SCCM by default.  Therefore, you can not use the web report or a query yet.  You first have to enable Software Inventory agent on the clients to inventory thumb.dd or just *.dd files.

Once you do this, the clients will report if they have a thumb.dd or *.dd files somewhere on the client.

(Note: only EXE files are inventoried by SMS by default - get it?  this means only files with the exe extention will be seen in your SMS database.  You have to first tell the SMS agent to look for something more then just EXE files.  After all, it is inventoried ALL files by default, your database would be HUGE!  It only inventories EXE file by default.  It only inventories EXE file by default.  It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default. It only inventories EXE file by default.
