I would like to know how I can insert the greek letter for sum (symbol £) in a word document, to write: the sum of i's from i=1 to n.

    You have two options:
    1) insert symbol directly - see and select Greek alphabet there
    2) Use built-in equations editor which is much more powerful and allowing you to create complicated multi-level equations

    I would use Equation Editor rather than just greek symbol, since it will give you the layout insert indices. As an alternative you can also check MathType (, but it's not free.
