I would like to know how I can insert the greek letter for sum (symbol £) in a word document, to write: the sum of i's from i=1 to n.

I would use Equation Editor rather than just greek symbol, since it will give you the layout insert indices. As an alternative you can also check MathType (http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/), but it's not free.
