math symbol for sum £

I would like to know how I can insert the greek letter for sum (symbol £) in a word document, to write: the sum of i's from i=1 to n.

You have two options:
1) insert symbol directly - see http://www.ehow.com/how_2070017_insert-symbols-microsoft-word.html and select Greek alphabet there
2) Use built-in equations editor http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051902471033.aspx which is much more powerful and allowing you to create complicated multi-level equations

I would use Equation Editor rather than just greek symbol, since it will give you the layout insert indices. As an alternative you can also check MathType (http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/), but it's not free.
