Virtual PCs running in VMWare Server all stuck at 95% trying to power up

We have a client who is running VMWare Server on a W2008 Server and today we noticed that all the virtual PCs (XP) that are running on the VMWare server are stuck at 95% trying to start up.  

I'm very familiar with ESX but not so much VMWare Server so I'm unfamiliar with how to troubleshoot this.

Any help is appreciated.

No error.  when i first noticed it it had been trying to power up those virtual PCs for over 10 days.  

You would think it would error out at some point.  Any idea where to find the log files in W2008?  

Also, not sure if this matters but the start button is blinking like it's trying to tell me something but I've checked every tab and don't see anything.  

Also, once they're stuck at 95% I'm unable to do anything with the machines, I have to completely reboot the W2008 server to try anything.  
Disable your AntiVirus on your server and then try to start the VMs again. Sometimes that causes the issue. Also make sure all the VMWare services on the HOST are running..
You should be looking at the VM log file, the VM log files are located in the same directory as the VM configuration (.vmx) file 
Have you tried starting the same VM on other test vmware server? It can be a pc/laptop with vmware server installed just for the sake of testing only
If you have aggressive AV on that server, make sure the VM directory is excluded, or test with AV disabled.

There is no AV on the server.  All services are running.

Hello Waident,

Check to make sure you have elevated admin privileges and als are able to read/write to where the virtual machine is located, that's usually why it gets stuck at 95%.

I'm assuming you installed it with elevated privileges and are allowed to use unsigned drivers. If not then change your settings to be able to use unsigned drivers and it should work.

Since it seems to apply to all VM's ... and you have no AV on the server - I recommend you uninstall VMWare Server 2 of the machine (make a note to see if there is any special VMNets configured for it). Reboot the server. Then reinstall VMWare Server. Something must have gone wrong with app, or a microsoft update / etc must have caused a conflict.
As questioned earlier, have you tried starting the same VM on other test vmware server?
If you can start the VM then you know its not a problem with your VM
Its strange that suddenly all VMs cant be started, something must have changed at the host, incompatible driver, dodgy microsoft patches, corrupted dlls, conflict with other app, etc.
Backup all VMs & reinstall vmware server might fix  the problem
If I were in your situation, I'll even reinstall the host OS to start fresh for peace of mind...the choice is yours

I uninstalled and reinstalled and am having the same problem.  any other ideas?
Try to clone a VM using vmware converter, see if that works

get this...i happen to try be looking in our remote management tool and saw one of the machines that was showing as starting was actually up and running just fine.  

So it apears the machine are starting just fine, I just can't use the console to control them and the admin interface is misleading.  

whatever...time to convert them to hyperV and be done with it.

Perhaps you should be looking at esxi instead, it is much more reliable product compared to vmware server
