Why would an attorney with one partner want to have a VPN?

Wouldn't it be easier to just encrypt sensitive files.

The VPN would allow the attorney to access his company files from a remote location over a secure tunnel.    VPN and file encryption are 2 different things...

doesn't a firewall do the job for most small companies?

Most Prosumer and pro firewalls all come with an option to build a VPN from site to site or from Client to site.   If you have a firewall at this location, check the model and see if it can VPN capabilities.   It just might have it already.

Yes I am installing a vpn-cable Watchguard.  This client wants it in his home, and I just want to make sure it's really worth the trouble.  There is a post out there which claims vpn with Business Opt On Line Static IP doesn't work.  That's why I thought if this guy could just encrypt sensitive files it may be simpler in the long run.  THE VPN will run out of his home.  He will be down in NYC.  So if the VPN runs into trouble it may be hard for him to get the maintenance.

If the VPN endpoint will be at a site with a static ip, then its easy.   If its at a site with a dynamic ip, its still possible with the use of a dynamic dns service.

If its a Watchguard, then you should have no trouble.   It really is pretty easy to setup....
