Prevent MySQL Log From Being Overwritten

I have a MySQL instance running on OSX that recently crashed. I pulled the error log to review, but instead of appending data to it upon recovery, it overwrote the existing log. Is there a variable or some way to prevent logs from being overwritten?

You justneed to use MySQL log rotation detailed in the link below
