Server 2008 Backup to local partition

Several months ago I ran across an article which listed a registry edit which allowed a 2008 server backup to be sent to a partition on a local drive array without destroying the drive data.   It worked like a champ.   I thought I wrote the reference down but now I can't find it and I need to make the change to another 2008 server.   Anybody seen know anything about this registry edit?  I used it to do a systemstate backup on a DC with a single mirrored array.   I created a small partition on the array to store the backup for pickup by my nightly backup to tape.
