Hi,

I have a Vista laptop on which most programs stopped working suddenly with a message such as this:
winword.exe failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrect

It also refers to a failed .Net dll.

I tried to reinstall.net framework and tried to install latest SP but all installs fail.

Event viewer is not accessible at all so can't check for clues.

System restore points are also gone.

Thanks

If you're maybe using AVG antivirus, please remove it from the system and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

"Side by side" errors are a byproduct of file corruption in the 64 bit version of Vista.

If removing AVG won't work, please completely remove the Microsoft Office installation and try to do a fresh install.

Which version of Microsoft Office / SO are you using?

You can also try to remove the Microsoft NET Framework and try to do a fresh install.
