Have a memory stick. When I insert it the green light remains constant and it does not register on My Computer? What is gone wrong? Any salvation?

Possibly, the drive letter is already taken.  Right-click My Computer and go to Manage.  Go to Disk Management, and try to assign your drive a letter, or even a path.

connect it to another PC - if it does not work there also, it's bad.
you can also try  different usb ports

I left the memory stick away from the laptop for 48 hours and tried then to use it. It t worked. Perhaps I was careless in the past about removing it from the laptop, not going through the correct procedure. In future I will be careful to remove it properly. It is now working again.
