In SQL Server 2005, what is the benefit of having a WOW version (32SQL on 64OS) over a 64on64 Setup? or Vice versa..

Both can access more physical memory. So, apart from that, what other constraints or points should be thought of, to determine which bit version of SQL should be considered and used? I assume WOW is going to be cheaper than the 64on64 option.

thanks

As I mentioned in the other question, WOW is a feature supported by OS..
It helps you to run 32 bit applications in a 64 bit environment thus providing the additional option to run both 32 and 64 bit applications..
Without WOW, you wont be able to run 32 bit applications in a 64 bit machine..

In 64 bit machines, its recommended to go for 64 bit applications for better performance and memory resource usage and if its not available, then you can go for 32 bit applications..

Hope this clarifies.

Jegan, you mention the benefit of WOW over 32on64 (for SQL install) is better perf and mem usage. My question is 32 bit also can use the better memory usage feature of 64bit OS. So how does the mem features of 64 bit SQL different.and compliment the 64 bit OS?

so, can you please explain what aspects of performance are increased by 64 bit SQL compared to a 32 bit SQL?

thanks

Not exactly. 32 bit applications can understand or utilize the resources internally using 32 bits only..
They wont use 64 bits for their operations and hence the performance increases while it runs under 64 bits or 64 on 64..

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

Thanks.
So if we have WOW64,
*we still need to enable AWE to use more than 4GB of physical memory
*Only the buffer pool can access the extra memory on WOW64, and query plans caching will happen only in the first 4 GB,
right?

Not required as the OS tells SQL Server the actual memory available in the server.
32 bit OS will not be able to recognize memory more than 4 GB in a machine whereas 64 bit OS recognizes it and tells the application that it is available..

But its recommended to enable AWE for a longer run as per some articles and testings..

*Only the buffer pool can access the extra memory on WOW64, and query plans caching will happen only in the first 4 GB, right?

As explained above, it would be able to utilize more than 4 GB till available memory..
Hope this clarifies..
