On advice from someone on ee I have purchased an itouch phone. I just want it to be a portable source of photos in folders.  How do I copy photos from my pc (xp pro) to the phone, please?

You tell iTunes where your photos are on your PC.

Organize yoour photos in your photo folder in my documents & in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences>iPod while connected>photos tab to select the folders you want to transfer to the iPod.

Thanks for your response, splait.

Err, forgive my ignorance, beginner is degree level from where I am at at the moment.  You say, in iTunes, is that on my pc?  If so, then edit > preferences gives me 'general, playback, sharing, store, parental control, apple tv, devices, advanced' - where do I find 'iPod'?  thanks
Sorry!  I gave you incorrect information.  Here's how to do it, straight from iTunes Help:

1. Connect your iPod to your computer using the cable that came with your iPod.

2. When the iPod icon appears in iTunes, select it and click the Photos tab.

3. Select Sync photos from and choose the photo application or folder that contains the photos you want from the pop-up menu.

NOTE:  If you're using Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0 or later, or Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 or later, you can export photos directly from those applications to your iPod by choosing Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.

4. Choose whether to move all your folders or albums, or only selected folders or albums.

That should do it!

Ok, thanks

2. I don't understand, are we talking about iTunes on the pc here?  I don't get an iPod icon................

So as I don't have a mac I have to purchase (eventually) a copy of adobe photoshop elements?

I'm still very confused...............
I will get back to you in a few minutes.  Went out to se Avatar 3D and will get on the computer to explain shortly.
A commercial first - if you haven't seen Avatar yet, see it.  If you can go to a 3D version, spend the extra and go there if you can.  It is absolutely amazing!

OK.  The instructions I gave you are for a PC, not a Mac.  When you plug in your iTouch, iTunes should take you to a window for the iTouch itself (within iTunes).that looks something like this (keep in mind that my iPod is not formatted for a Windows environment, so the wording on the screen will be different for you):
