Kindly try connecting using your old server name itself and it should work..

And steps to change your SQL Server name here:

-- Drop old server name
sp_dropserver 'ur_old_server_name';
-- Add new server name
sp_addserver 'ur_new_server_name', local

This would help you change your server name..
And after that you can try connecting to your new server name and that should work..

Just run those commands in SSMSE if you have or run it using SQLCMD from command prompt..

And make sure you are in master database while running that script:

use master
go
-- Drop old server name
sp_dropserver 'ur_old_server_name';
-- Add new server name
sp_addserver 'ur_new_server_name', local

forgive my ignorance but what exactly is SSMSE?  Also in sqlexpress it sees the server name that I gave it.
