I need to install lazarus onto my computer, but I am not sure what to download and in which order. Could someone please outline a clear list of things I should download - supplying hyperlinks, and then point out anything I need to know.

I tried to do it myself and when i click on the lazarus desktop short I get this message -

the free pascal source directory was not found - some code functions will not work,
it is recommended that you install it and set the path environment - environment options -
files.

What I have done is un installed lazarus - so can someone tell me what to do

You haven't specified what platform you are working on so it is not possible to give you step by step instructions as they vary.

The full Lazarus installation step by step instructions have been covered by the Lazarus Documentation Project here http://wiki.lazarus.freepascal.org/Installing_Lazarus

Ok, for Win XP you can get the latest installer here http://sourceforge.net/projects/lazarus/files/Lazarus%20Windows%2032%20bits/Lazarus%200.9.28.2/lazarus-0.9.28.2-fpc-2.2.4-win32.exe/download

The documentation states that "The current releases of the Windows Lazarus binary packages install very easily, and should work 'out-of-the-box'." so you should be okay with the latest version. Just run through the installer.

Yeah, that file was what I downloaded and got the error message i stated above. Might it be that I had not uninstalled the previous version properly !

Just to clarify - as I am going to install lazarus on another computer - the link to the file in your post above - that (installing the program after downloading where that link takes you) is all you need to do to fully install lazarus - is that correct - there are no other files I need to download / install before or after !

You should only need that file to run Lazarus.

Some earlier versions had issues but the latest version is fine.

Just to confirm.

It certainly looks that your previous install did not work properly. You should uninstall it, restart your computer and reinstall.

The download above should be perfect. I have just downloaded it, installed onto a clean PC and it works fine. My Pascal is a bit rusty these days but Lazarus does work great from the link above.
