iPhone - how to unlock

I moved out of the country w/ my family, and ATT didn't unlock my 4 iphones!

Someone refered to ziphone.org, does anyone know if this is a safe site?

I have GS and 3GS phones...
Any tips on how to proceed?

tks,

For the iphone, there are a few applications like cydia ext to unlock & jailbrake the iphone for free.
You can also pay for phones to be unlocked at specific shops.

You can use Blackra1n its free, and very easy to use. http://blackra1n.com/
Or you can go here www.hackthatphone.com lots of manuals and how to's.

The unlocker is called ultrasn0w.. just follow this (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253)
There is a bit of confusion in this thread between jailbreaking and unlocking.

Depending on the model of your phone, you may need a different app to jailbreak or unlock.

Essentially, jailbreak is a prerequisite of unlocking. To jailbreak your phone, I recommend you check out pwnage tools by the iPhone Dev Team, the most robust jailbreak tool, or Blackra1n, if you're not too tech savvie and just want a quick solution for a 3.1.2 iPhone 3G/3GS.

Then, depending on your model, you may need yellowsn0w (2G), ultrasn0w  (pwned 3.1.2 3G or 3GS) or blacksn0w (3.1.2 baseband 5.11.07 3G or 3GS)
We really need to know the following:

Model: 2g, 3g, 3gs?
OS: 2.0, 3.0, 3.13, etc.?

Then we can help. Here is a good guide i used for my 3GS on 3.1.3:

http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak-iphone-os-3.1.3-firmware-with-redsn0w-0.9.4/

Probably the best soruce for tutorials:

Firstly, you are going to need to be jailbroken to unlock an iPhone.

Hopefully, you are on 3.1.2 firmware on your iPhone, if you are not (if you are in 3.1.3 firmware), you cannot unlock it as of now but there should be a jailbreak and 05.12.01 unlock for your iPhone.

Firstly, download Blackra1n from here:

http://www.blackra1n.com

Once you have blackra1n, plug your phone into your computer, open up blackra1n, then click "Make it Ra1n".  Your iPhone will have this face with iPhones on it, this is okay.  After around 5 minutes, your iPhone will boot up and you will see an application called Blackra1n on your iPhone.  Open up this application, making sure that you have an internet connection, then install BlackSn0w.  Follow the steps after this and your iPhone should be unlocked!

Good luck!

Thanks all for your comments.

I was able to unlock my kids iPhone (3G and 3.1.2).

Unfortunately my iPhone (3GS) and my wife's (3G) was with OS 3.1.3, and nothing works.  Even some sw to bring back the 3.1.2 version that I found on the internet.

I will wait for a version to do it for 3.1.3, not sure what SpeedyApocalypse means by "there should be a jailbreak and 05.12.01 unlock for your iPhone"

tks,
Roni
When you updated to 3.1.3, your iPhone baseband was updated.  This is the thing that allows your iPhone to be unlocked.  Currently, there is no unlock for the 05.12.01 baseband, which you have.  On your Wife's phone, since it is a 3G with an MB model number, she can actually downgrade her phone to 3.1.2 and then try an unlock.

The process is actually somewhat easy to unlock her iPhone, but yours cannot be unlocked at this time.  Firstly, you have to jailbreak using RedSn0w, I have posted a guide on this website on how to do it:

http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=276351

NOTE:  You are going to need the 3.1.2 firmware for your iPhone, just google: Felixbruns Firmware and click on the FelixBruns.de link to select your firmware.  The size will be around 260mb.  You are going to want to download the firmware entitled iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw.

Once you are jailbroken with RedSn0w and have Cydia, go onto Cydia and search for FuzzyBand.

Once you have downloaded FuzzyBand, it will check your Wife's iPhone's bootloader version.  Pray that it is 05.08 :)  If it is, click Downgrade and it will say flashing for around 1 minute to 2 minutes.  Once it says that you have downgraded your baseband, hop back onto Cydia and look for "UltraSn0w" without the quotes.

Once you have downloaded UltraSn0w, you just follow the instructions and you will have an unlocked iPhone.  This video is great and outlines these steps in an easy to follow voice tutorial, I urge you to check it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQXhI32GtGo

So, there you go, your Wife's iPhone 3G is unlocked.  If RedSn0w does not work for you, you can check out this guide on how to downgrade your Wife's iPhone using that 3.1.2 firmware that we downloaded earlier.

http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277386

Once it is downgraded, go to www.blackra1n.com and download Blackra1n.  Run that (there are many guides on the internet) and you will have Blackra1n on your app pages.  Install Cydia then follow the next instructions for downgrading your baseband.

Hi SpeedyApocalypse,

Thanks for your detailed info.
I spent the whole Sunday on it, but unfortunately it didn't work.
I have a Mac.

I ended finding a 0.9.2 redsn0w for Mac.  (I tried first with the 0.9.4 however according to you, that would not work for my iphone (3G)

Managed to go through the next steps, but FuzzyBand didn't work, said my baseband wasn't good (baseband was not 05.08)

I also tried your second suggestion to downgrade to 3.1.12, but that didn't work.   First I could not be sure if I got the iPhone into DFU, as following the instructions I could not hear a "beep" that informed me I was in DFU.   Assuming it was, I managed to "restore"  using the 3.1.12 firmware, but at the end I got an 1015 error.

Not sure if some of my iphone info helps:
- Modem Firmware 05.12.01
- Model MB046LL

tks,
Roni

The download links were for a PC so you would've needed the Mac versions of RedSn0w, and you said you did that, so that's good.  Now, on FuzzyBand, did it say you had the 05.09 bootloader on the iPhone 3G?  If it did, or if there was anything higher than 05.08, I am afraid that you cannot unlock your iPhone until a new unlock comes out for the 05.12.01 baseband.  When that comes out, you will be able to jailbreak and unlock.  It is confirmed that the new 4.0 firmware that will probably be coming out in June upgrades be baseband again, so you have to be careful and do not upgrade to that, as you will have to wait even longer for a new unlock.  If you just stay on 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 firmware, and wait for the 05.12.01 baseband unlock, you will be able to unlock your phone and keep it unlocked.
ok, tks :-(
If you hear about a new unlock, I appreciate if you can let me know about it.
They have already confirmed that there are 3 jailbreaks coming out for ALL devices on 3.1.3, and with this, there is probably going to be an unlock.  The further we go, Apple catches up the hackers and starts to patch the holes and exploits with the new released Firmwares and iPods.  The 3.1.3 firmware claimed it had a few "bug fixes" but really, it patched the hole that all of the hackers used to exploit the 3.1.2 firmwares.  You can expect an unlock in the coming months.

If you would like to hear about it first hand, you can visit a forum such as Mac City, iPodTouchFans, or ModMYI once in a while, to read the news.  If you would like to follow some twitters of the hackers, as you will hear about all developments there, you can follow Saurik, Musclenerd, and Geohot.  Geohot is the one that made the 3.1.2 unlock BlackSn0w and he also made BlackRa1n.  He also has a jailbreak for the 4.0 beta firmware and the 3.2 firmware on the iPad.

Go to http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
there you will find info on how to jailbreak & unlock your iPhones.
Simpliest way is to use  redsn0w. You will need the IPSW (update file) of the version of your iphone(s) to do it.
Now all basebands can be unlocked. simply jailbreak it, install ultrasn0w and insert any SIM card!
Hope this helps. if you have any question on how to do it, tell me ;)
doesnt work.   My baseband is 5.12.0.1   My phone is 3GS with 3.1.3
everywhere I read, it is mentioned that it doesn't work for that baseband.     Hope there is good news in the horizon...otherwise I will need to buy a new phone.   Absurd, as I bought in the US, had it for a while, then relocated to Brazil (ATT doesn't unlock it).
