Try
1) cleaning the print heads
2) a new cartridge
3) settings in the driver (some drivers allow you to adjust the amount of ink used on the page)
4) reinstalling the printer.

If you're printing in "draft" quality, you can expect grey on many printers.

it will do it even it i copy direct on the printer...
There should be a setting to make "photocopies" darker. Have you tried it?

This should help you with the "lightness" of the print:

Also, try printing out a full test page.

I take it you have tried a new black ink/print cartridge?
