MS SQL 2k backs up databases to NPS files

I am attempting to backup an existing database, which is currently residing on a version 8.0.760 server, using SQL server management studio express with the intention of moving it to a server with the latest build of 2005 express. The problem is, it seems to only want to backup the files, at least by manually doing so, to .nps files. Perhaps I am just unfamiliar with this extensions, but I did not see a way to restore using them. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

file extension doesn't matter. I've seen database backups with really random extensions or without them at all and it was never a problem to restore it.
