What e-mail architecture for 10M e-mails a day in real time

What type of e-mail solution should a modern notification-intensive start-up use (hosted, in-house, third-party, etc.)? I'm guessing about 10M a day to account holders. This is just for some really preliminary planning...

Thank you!

Is this suitable only for internal use, or would you recommend this for high-capacity communications with customers? E.g., a web-base business, sending notifications to customers every day?
