Is .NET Framework essential to the operation of Exchange?

I am experiencing update failures with .NET, and would like to delete all versions from my server and start over, but I need to  know if .NET is integral to Exchange, in case there are issues with reinstalling.

OK. Well since I inadvertantly gave 500 pts to a yes/no question, perhaps I can get some advice on how to fix the underlying problem.

I get this error sequence each day:

Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at 3:00 AM:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86.

Attached is an image of the current .NET installation.

The most critical issue is that the server will often hang on a reboot (i.e.after an autoupdate). The only log entries that are suspicious are above.
have you tried downloading the installation and running it manually?
I found 3.5 and tried to install it, but got a failure, which I did not record, but it would most likely do the same thing again...
I have the .net 3.0 installer (dotnetfx3.exe). I am considering uninstalling the current 3.0 sp2 and reinstalling. How risky is this?
Hello,

My recommendation would be to try installing 3.5 again manually but this time, capture the error message and post it. Also, post any relevant event log messages.

The specific fix (gleaned from the above links):

Download and run netfx_cleanup to remove older .NET versions (removed 2.0 and higher)
Reinstall 3.0 then 3.5.
