Reinstalling DirectX on an Inspiron e1405 after reinstalling Windows XP

I recently reformatted my inspiron e1405.

I reinstalled windows XP and installed updates from Microsoft.

It currently reads as Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.

I installed “Rome: Total War”.

When I tried to play “Rome Total War” I got the following error message:

“Rome Total War failed to find DirectX 9, which is required for the game to run
Please reinstall DirectX ”

I bring up the Rome: Total War launch screen.

I click on “Extras”

I click on “DirectX”

Box entitled “Installing Microsoft® DirectX® appears.

I follow the instructions.

“The components installed are now ready for use”

I bring up the Rome Total War” launch menu.

I click on “Play Rome: Total War”.

“Rome Total War failed to find DirectX 9, which is required for the game to run
Please reinstall DirectX ”

I download the file dxsetup.exe

I run the program.

I get the following message

“DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX
has been installed already.  No installation is necessary.”

Where am I going wrong?

Microsoft DirectX web installer says my pc has DirectX.

“Rome: Total War” says I need to install DirectX.

What should I do?

Probably the problem is that your version of DirectX is newer than Rome Total War uses, and therefore when it does it's check, it is not happy.

See if there are any updates for Rome Total War. I am sure they have patches and other updates that are out there.

Get RTW fully up to date and try again.
You have to install Windows XP SP2(without update) to play the game, when you update from microsoft, they update your directx with new version. This new version is not compatible with the game.

I think Rome: Total War comes with DirectX on CD so you can install it from there.
Remove any previous version from computer. Here is how :

MASQUERAID,

I was talking about video drivers twice in my two posts above.

I know - I thought a little pointer might help ;)
SiJim5 - did any of the suggested fixes help you with the problem?  If so please award points to the Expert(s) who helped you.
Thanks
SiJim5,

I'm afraid you cannot simply delete a frequented question with the remark "Thanks for the help".

On Experts-Exchange, you are expected to credit as solution/assisted solutions those comments that actually solved your problem or helped you solve it.
Should you have solved the problem yourself, and none of the comments here pointed you at the actual solution, then it is common practise for an asker to state in a comment what he/she did to solve the issue, and then to accept their own comment as the solution. This way, future members with the same problem will be able to find it in the database.

Thank you.

I reviewed all of the posted solutions.

I did not implement any of them.

After repeatedly reinstalling Direct X and not having it work, I took my laptop to a local PC service business.  They installed all the missing drivers.

The laptop is working now.

While I personally didn't follow the solutions, the technicians that repaired my laptop did.  keep in mind, they knew nothing of my contacts with Experts Exchange.
well,if no posted solution here  helped you then you should get a refund....
DrDamnit said your version is newer than required.I told you to remove it and use the one on the CD.
That is all that was actually required....
