Super Audio Listening Disc

I am looking for a recommendation as to what burning software I can use to transfer a SACD image generated by Philips' Super Author of my own audio content to a Super Audio Listening Disc which I can then audition on my SACD player before committing to a replication order.

In other words, I want to verify, in house, what the end result of a SACD Master would be like in the SACD player.  BTW, I have a recorder that will write a SACD disk.  It's the format produced by Super Author that has me baffled. Since I have both Mac and Windows computers available for burning this Listening Disk, whatever works best is most appreciated.

SACD has several copy protection features at the physical level which, for the moment, appear to make SACD discs impossible to copy without resorting to the analog hole, or ripping of the conventional 700MB layer on hybrid discs. These include physical pit modulation and 80-bit encryption of the audio data, with a key encoded on a special area of the disk that is only readable by a licensed SACD device. The HD layer of an SACD disc cannot be played back on computer CD/DVD drives, nor can SACDs be created except by the licensed disc replication facilities in Shizuoka and Salzburg.[48]

A number of new SACD players have encrypted IEEE 1394 (also called FireWire or i.Link) or HDMI digital outputs carrying DSD data, and it may be possible to get the raw DSD data from these links. The protection mechanism used is Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP), which can be used in "Copy Once" or "Copy Never" modes.

There seems to be one solution for obtaining digital non-DRM output on SACD as well as DVD-A players. A Switzerland based company is offering a modified output board that taps into the digital datastream prior to D/A conversion as well as converting DSD to PCM that the S/PDIF port can transfer.

Thank you for your reply.   It is not my goal in this application to rip a commercial Super Audio CD for purposes of making a copy.  In my application, I authored the source DSD audio on a Sonoma DSD Workstation and on it prepared a cutting master file and its associated two-channel DSD Audio Stereo Interleaved File:

From this result, I created a SACD Image using the Philips application called Super Author. Super Author created the directory hierarchy of files as shown in my question.  My question was how I could transfer this image to a Super Audio CD write-once recorder enabling creation of a Super Audio Listening Disc.

The Super Author Manual states the following:

"3.6 Creating the Disc Image

Once you've designed and verified the album, hit the <Build Disc> button to bring up the Build Disc window.  Select the discs that you want to create the images for and then click Build.  The bottom of the dialog shows the progress of the build operation.

After the build operation, the separately developed Philips SA-CD Verifier will start, which verifies the disc image produced by SuperAuthor.  If no errors are found you can write the disc image to tape in the SA-CD Cutting Master Format (CMF).  This is the final output of SuperAuthor."

The disc image seems to be written in such a manner as to frustrate the transfer of it to a SA-CD recorder.  It appears that if I can figure out how to transfer this image properly, I may be able to write it out to the SA-CD recorder using a DVD-R blank disc.  Thus, I can obtain my Super Audio Listening Disc without having to bother using the expensive facilities of the replicator to make it for me from the SA-CD Cutting Master Format files I would provide them with on AIT tape.  Can you help me accomplish this feat?

BTW, SuperAuthor provides a Copy Management Properties dialogue which allows for three copy management settings to be viewed/modified from that widow:

"1.  Audio Encryption
 2.  Using the SA-CD Mark will make the disc DVD-ROM incompatible, therefore preventing piracy using a PC.
 3.  A Visible Watermark gives a visible print on the disc.  If this method is used then a watermark bitmap must be specified.  (In the File Parameters window, you can also specify a bitmap (.bmp) to be used as the Visible Watermark.  This file is optional.  Please check with your replicator first if Visible Watermarks are supported.)

Note that the top two settings must be turned on and can therefore not be modified."

Normally, the production workflow entails that the Cutting Master Format file is used by the replicator to create the glass master and then they stamp a test check disc for my review.  The purpose of my question is to determine how I can make a test check disc using the SA-CD recorder.

Further information:

Apparently, Super Author will only write the cutting master file to a SCSI bus connected device such as a AIT-2 tape drive.  I am checking to see if there is a SCSI SACD recorder available...highly doubtful that it is.  In the meanwhile, I am asking the question of what can be done to write the SACD image, above referenced, out to my ATAPI SACD recorder external to Super Author such that the disc can be played on a commercially available SACD player.  Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Update:

A ATAPI to SCSI converter card is due to arrive soon.  When it does, I will connect it to the SACD recorder and see if Philips Super Author will recognize it.  If it does, I will attempt to write out the Cutting Master to it and then see if the SACD player will recognize and play the disc.

Also, it appears that the SACD Disc Image consists of two files in a directory:

DVDID.DAT and DVDIMAGE.DAT.  I already tried writing these to a DVD-R and the SACD player did not play the resultant disc.  It is useful to know what does not work.

I object to the deletion of this question because the content in it is useful even if the question has not yet been answered.  In the meanwhile, I have been able to determine the following information in my search for an answer.  The Disc Image file is in the form of a DDP image.  I think a lot of audio engineers, including me, will be appreciative of being given a solution to this question.

The high cost of making a glass master from a CMF file is frustrating us from being able to distribute listenable check discs to our cluents for approval of SACD 5.1 surround content playback at DSD Audio quality.

Even if the answer is that a SALD cannot be created except by the replication plant, at least the reasons why and the research given and done will be documented.
