We've just installed SBS 2008 and all is well with email and remote access.  It seems that we have one last issue - none of the remote devices that send me alerts can do so via SMTP,   APC UPSes, Backup Programs RAID arrays and the like all fail when trying to do so.  I know that SBS 2008 wants to SSL all connections and I've forwarded port 465 and turned on the SMTP and IMAP services all without success.  Can you please instruct on how to allow for these notifications ?  Thanks

I believe you have to configure them to login with a domain account for sending.  domain\user and then the password.

Otherwise you would have to configure exchange 2007 to allow non-authenticated clients to send.

Configure a smtp relay connector on your exchange 2007 and then setup your devices with the ip address and port for your exchange and you should be able to get emails ;
above article explains on how to configure a relay connector.
