We use XP and Server 2003
If you are running Windows XP ensure that you have install the lastes version of remote desktop connection.
Open remote desktop connection
Enter the host name of the terminal server
Click on the options tab
Enter the username and tick the "Allow me to save credentials"
Navigate to the Programs Tab
Tick "Start the following program on connected"
Enter the relevant details
Navigate back to the General tab
Save the connection to the desktop
Connect and enter the users password

The ultimate solution would be to upgrade to Windows 2008 and use remote application
