HP Scanjet 5590 Freezes Up

Hello,

I have a HP Scanjet 5590 Scanner that has been working for years, but after I had a computer crash, I stopped working.
I am running Windows XP SP3.  I installed the HP Software, and everything said it successfully installed.  When I try to scan a document (Through HP Photo and Imaging Director) , it starts to scan, but a few seconds into the scan the lamp/carriage inside the scanner stops moving.  The software just says "scanning...." but nothing happens.  It completely freezes up and the only way that I can continue is by ending the process in task manager.  At that point, I also have to unplug the scanner and plug it back in to get the scanner to react to my commands at all.
I did update the software and the drivers, but it did not make a difference.

To help my diagnostics, I hooked the scanner up to another system I have here.  I let windows install the software with a driver that was either built into XP or with one on the windows update site (cant remember), and tried to scan through the windows Scanner and Camera Wizard.  I set the settings, and started the scan.  The same thing happens.  The cariage immediatly moves a few inches, then it the software/scanner freezes.

When I check the path that the picture to be scanned was supposed to go to, I see a file was created, but I cannot view the file (obviously because it wasnt complete).

Does anybody have any ideas?
