Quickbooks 2008 over Cisco VPN fails reverse IP lookup

We have a remote workstation with Quickbooks 2008 trying to attach to the company files on a WinSBS 2008 server. We're getting H202 errors now and I've used the QuickBooks Net Diagnostic Tool to find out what the problem is. The next step is figuring out how to resolve the problem because I'm not sure what it means.

Here is the text from the Diagnostic Log which contains the offending results:

20100126.03:05:38 UTC      UNC Conversion for mapped drive is \\sbs01.dcla.local\data\QuickBooks\Company Data Files\DCLA, Inc..qbw
20100126.03:05:38 UTC      Doing reverse IP lookup for Host Name :sbs01
20100126.03:05:38 UTC      Entering ReverseLookUp Method. Parameter: Machine Name = sbs01
20100126.03:05:40 UTC      Exception while doing Reverse Lookup
System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No such host is known
   at System.Net.Dns.InternalGetHostByName(String hostName, Boolean includeIPv6)
   at System.Net.Dns.GetHostByName(String hostName)
   at QBConnectivityTool.QBConnectivity.ReverseLookup(String machineName)
20100126.03:05:40 UTC      Reverse Lookup Failed

I don't know if something's not getting passed through the Cisco ASA5505 VPN or if I've got some DNS settings wrong on the server, or what.

It appears that there is a DNS issue. On the remote computer once it has established a vpn connection try pinging sbs01, you should get a reply. If it times out you know it is definetly a dns issue. I would assume that this would have to do with a setting you forgot to add in the vpn setup on the pix.

I forgot to ask, I am assuming no internal users are hving issues connecting to the database?

Ignoring name resolution issues, just a "heads up".  Using QuickBooks over a VPN with the application at the client end, and the data at the remote site is not supported. The slow link and the fact that the database is so "chatty" results in slow performance and there is a definite risk of data corruption. The recommended option is to grant the remote user access to the corporate site on a terminal server or workstation using the remote desktop client so that data and application reside on the same LAN.

I can get a reply when I ping sbs01.dcla.local, but not sbs01. So, to shortcut the issue, I put an entry into my HOSTS file on this machine and it works. Yes, the remote connection is slow (mostly when people on the LAN are streaming Pandora radio channels at the same time), but it's an option we have to use sometimes if the RDP/TS machine is not available.

The other thing I noticed about the VPN is the ipconfig values on the workstation don't have a default gateway. Is that only on my primary LAN adapter connection or did I miss a parameter on the ASA?

>>"I can get a reply when I ping sbs01.dcla.local, but not sbs01"
Host file is one solution the other is to add the domain suffix to the DNS tab of the advanced configuration of the Virtual Adapter's TCP/IP properties.

>>"........it's an option we have to use sometimes if the RDP/TS machine is not available."
QuickBooks warns this can corrupt data.

>>"ipconfig values on the workstation don't have a default gateway"
If split-tunneling is allowed the default gateway will sometimes show as 0.0.0.0 and sometimes blank

Solution pointed in the right direction. I was able to come up with workaround related to diagnosis myself.
