My Laptop WINXP froze, was rebooted and  is now running CHKDSK on its own. I see it's doing stage 2 of 3. Has 6 percent completed. That is where it has been for almost an hour. HD is about 250Gb big. CPU is Core 2 duo 1.8Gh. The disk light is not blinking at all. Is this normal? What should I do now? Thanks for any help.

No, it's not normal. I think it found a bad sector and cannot proceed more. You should try this command for all drives-
chkdsk c: /f Here c: is a drive name.
It will try to fix the problem.

By the way, what is the best way to back up data and files from my HD? Any online free backup somewhere? Please recommend a good solution. Thanks.

did you try to boot in the Last Known Good Configuration?

To backup, use another external hard disk and a backup software like Acronis.

Hopeleonie,
I didn't.
I simply turned off the box and turned it back on. Then the CHKDSK started on its own.

You can write the files to dvds and/or usb/external harddrives for backups. Shutdown/restart the machine in routine way, not by forceful turning off power to skip the chkdisk/scandisk. System restore /Recovery would be helpful
