How to disable GNOME session ?

I would like to disable my GNOME desktop environment and want to use the basic X display session.
I remember I need to comment out exec "gnome-session" from some file, but not sure of exact step.
Could someone help me here please. Thanks!

At login, you can change the environment you are using to login.  I think here you have the option to set the new one as the default.  What OS are you running, which other Desktop environment do you have available?

from gui is under SYSTEM->PREFERENCES->SESSIONS.
gnome-session-remove
