Do I need both TS CALs AND User CALs for WS 2008 Remote Desktop Users

I'm setting up a WS 2008 (not R2) for a client. They'll use Terminal Services (aka Remote Desktop) to connect to their server desktops. Do I need both a User CAL AND a TS CAL (aka RDS CALs) for each remote user or do I need only one kind of CAL for each remote user, and if so, which kind?

Anything special I need to know besides that?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

It really depends on how you set it up.  For most people they only need per user CALs.  You will need to ensure that you have 2008 versions of those CALs.  The best way to do this would be to install the TS Licensing on a Server 2008 system and manage them there.

Here are two excellent articles on Server 2008 TS Licensing:

Thanks for the links; I'll read those articles.

I don't know what you mean by "it really depends o how you set it up" but let's assume everything will be brand new. New server, new OS license, new CALs. We will not be using device CALs, only user CALs. Here is the question:

Does each user that will connect via Remote Desktop to run applications on the server have to have both a TS (RDS) CAL and a User CAL, or is only one kind of CAL required for each user? Or am I simply confused about all the CAL business and there really is only 1 CAL per user required?

Sorry for the confusion.  Only 1 CAL per user is required.
