How can I enable telnet login on Backtrack 3 (which is a liveCD slackware derivative)?

There is no inetd.conf in /etc

(I need telnet login since I can't get ssh login working through a reverse ssh tunnel)

Look for /etc/xinetd.conf!
Learn more with 'man xinetd.conf' or here - http://linux.die.net/man/5/xinetd.conf

That file /etc/xinetd.conf doesn't exist either.

Well I'm not sure why but inetd is not installed in backtrack3.  I was able to telnet by manually invoking "in.telnetd -debug" - the following one line shell script will do this if running in the background:

while true; do; in.telnetd -debug; done
