DELL Inspiron 8500 Serial COM Port Issue
Im trying to communicate to a serial device via the COM port. Im using hyperterminal and when i try and send my data I dont see anything in Hyperterminal. I have double checked and triple checked the budrate and any other protocol. I ahve gone into device manager and looked at the COM port it says its installed correctly no error. What can I do to further test this?
The device on the other end of the link may not be echoing characters. There is usually an option in terminal emulators called "local echo." If this is enabled, typing is displayed on the screen without the necessity of the remote device echoing it.

FireRunt, after a follow your steps and launch the hyper terminal program I get a message Stating that there is no serial ports installed on this machine
OK
Now in the device manager, hit scan for hardware changes
It should find the port and the device should be recognized

it did not, there is still a Red x
OK
Right click on that one and re-enable it, then uninstall it
Reboot the machine with the device plugged in
It should reinstall the port
Then try connecting again

Do you think Dell support may be able to give me an idea?
I doubt it. You will be stuck on the phone for hours until they transfer you to india and then you wont be able to understand anyone....
Under curiosity, exactly what are you trying to do anyway? What kind of device?

its a hand held device. Im jsut trying to send some data over a Null modem cable. the same setup works on every other PC.
Can you be more specific? I have many handheld devices....

its a data collector we manufacture to send reading to a serial com. In this case this data collector uses a null modem to communicate to a PC.

I ran a windows repair and ten updated drivers from the DELL website.
1. Boot the computer with the device attached.
2. Select Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager.
3. Find your device
4. Select "Actions" and then "disable".
7. Click "OK" to close each window
8. Reboot the computer with the device attached.
