Is Exchange required for OCS 2007 R2?

Hi All.  We want to deploy Office Communication Server 2007 R2 64-Bit Standard (or Ent) edition.  For this year all we want to do is use instant messaging and web conferencing.  We will not be using UM with PBX integration, etc.

Can we install/run the OCS infrastructure without a Exchange server in place?  initally we are setting this up in a Lab, which may not have an Exchange 2007 server in place.  Just wanted to make sure??

Exchange is not a requirement for  OCS, It will be required if you need the following,

1)Exchange UM - If you use Exchange Unfiied Messaging which would be integrated with OCS then
offcourse you need Exchange, also just for UM you don't need Exchange UM you can
use other apps like Cisco Unity which donot require Exchange UM role inplace.

2).Outlook Integration via Exchange EWS - Integrate OOF (Out Of Office) Calendar and Notes with
                                                                    Office Communicator
