Has anyone found a way to stop Windows 7 from displaying enlarged icons while dragging?

I find this to be a real pain because it is harder to drop the icon wher you want it. Changing the icon size is a  stupid "feature."

That is because you are dragging your icon  over other folder icons.
Learn to drag it more to the right....
In performance options there is an option for Use visual styles on windows and buttons.  It will disable the enlarged icons but it will also disable the Aero.  Not the best fix but it may help out.

No that is not true. In Vista and 7 as soon as you drag an item anywhere it changes to a big icon.

Also I probably want to drag and drop into another folder, that is the main point of dragging.

It doesn't matter if you drag "to the right" either. By the way I think the new Windows behavoir of automatically picking the folder or program to the left as the destination even if you are over a clear space is garbage too. The item should drop into the folder window you are in unless you specifically drop over some other folder or icon.

One way to prevent this is to (in your system advanced settings) to  optimize your
computer for 'Best performance'.

"optimize your computer for 'Best performance'" Close but overkill and not precise enough. The answer is to uncheck "Use visual sryles on windows and buttons."
