We have a SBS 2003 without ISA server and we configured the FTP on it but for some reason we are not able access it externally. I already checked and the FTP port is open (21) FTP is enabled in the Internet and email wizard. I do not know what else we're missing.

Thanks!

You need to open also FTP data port - TCP port 20. Redirect both to internal servers IP address.

I opened the port and ran the internet and email wizard and it still doesn't work. If i try to open it on IE it just says "internet cannot display webpage."  If i open it at Firefox it gives me a "425 can't open data connection error."  It actually asks for the username/pw but then it kind of bloicks me from accessing it...like I mentioned before internally iworks fine.
what do you mean by port opened?

Are you added NAT in firewall r router?

PUBLIC IP ->Internal FTP IP for port 21 ?

can you telnet to that port from outside?
Have you tried to enter user name in format: domain\username

I opened it from routing & remote access IP routing>NAT/Basic Firewall>network connection right click >properties --> services & ports --> add and added FTP data port 20...I then ran the internet and email wizard and I sar the FTP Data port enabled. However, I used the program NMAP to see if the port was open and it lists it but it actually says it is closed :(
what is your equipment between your SBS server and internet?
How do you connect to internet?

I thought there was nothing between the internet and our server and I saw a Cisco 1700 router in the middle. However the FTP used to work fine before the hard drive crashed (about 3 months ago) and we haven't touch that router.
Sorry for long delay...
Maybe you can try to use shieldsup form www.grc.com to test if the ports are open properly.

Well I do not know what happened but we are able to access the ftp now. The only thing we did on it was to install updates and reboot the server, how weird...Thanks so much for your help! Port 20 still shows as closed but we are able to upload and open folders or create new files.
Glad to hear that!
Ms updates? Do you have updated also NIC drivers?
Is it any possibility that you have HP Proliant server?
I had similar problem downloading from FTP to server on ML350 G5 - it was solved by updating NIC FW and drivers...
