MS Access 2007 to update SQLEXPRESS 2005 on network server?

Before I start down this road, I'd like to know if it is possible to use MS Access 2007 to update records on a SQLExpress DB located on a network server.  I'm seeing some indications that SQLExpress doesn't work for direct connects over a network (that you would need to be on the same machine SQLExpress is installed on).  So before I start down the road by requesting that Access 2007 be bought and installed on my client PC, I'm curious if anyone knows if this is easily do-able.

Hi,

SQL Express will work just fine with MS Access "front end" db.  You will be able to select, update, delete, etc. just like the full SQL Server.

And that'll work over the network with the DB on a server and Access running on a PC?  That's where I heard there might be problems.  Ok if Access and SQLExpress were on the same machine, not OK if they were on different machines...

Hi Rich,

Not true in my experience.  I connect to SQLExpress using DSN (linked tables) or DSNLess connections.  I do this all the time - many apps in production with many users - even over internet if small bits of data.  Never had an issue.

Thanks Bill, I have made an initial request to the boss.  I suspected that it would be OK but things being what they are it's always best to check beforehand.  It makes sense that they would fit together well.
