HP Multi-Function L7380 scan issue

I have a client who has an HP L7380 MultiFunction printer connected to his PC via USB.  I recently re-installed his OS on the PC with a bigger hard drive, so it is a clean install.
We installed the MFC software for the unit.  It can print and fax fine, however when we try to scan we get the error :
An eror occurred communicating with the scanning device.  Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again.

I am almost certain I was able to scan when I first put his newly installed PC back in.  This was prior to McAfee Internet Security being installed.  We uninstalled McAfee but still no luck.  Same thing.  He has taken the printer back to place of purchase as it is a recent purchase and they tested it and said the scanner works fine.
Does anyone else have any idea's on this?

I will try it out, but as I said the printing side of things is fine.  It is only the scanning feature that brings this error up.  I am going to the clients house now so will let you know in about half an hour if it has fixed the issue!

Thanks
Ill be asleep in 10....   :)

Remember, Printer=Scanner=Same physical device in *most* cases......
can you make an off-line copy on the MFP ?  that will show if the scanner DOES work
nobus: what do you mean by that?
I have the PC and printer back with me now.  I spent two hours at the clients premises trying to get this printer to work on the PC.  It is a PC issue, maybe registrey settings or something.  I connected the printer upto my laptop and was able to install the software and have the scanner working perfectly.

It was a newly installed PC though so not sure where the issue is.  NOw when I try to install the HP software again it is coming up with other errors.  It seems to be deteriorating now.

Everything else about this PC works perfectly except for the HP Software and the scanning function.

I will connect them up here and post the latest error.
I uninstalled all HP software and used the Microsoft uininstaller to remove the HP CIO??? softwar as well as suggested on another website.
Also removed all temp files from the user account.

I may try creating a new user and seeing if the scanner will work on a new user account!

off-line copy?  = even with the unit disconnected from pc - press the copy button... lol

Yes I was able to make an offline copy.  This did not solve the scanning issue with the PC though
