PS3  video in the pal broadcast standard is not supported

Hi all,

I have a PS3 slim version I just bought it from USA.

Everything seems to be working fine but unfortunately I cannot play movies or videos.

I get an error "video in the pal broadcast standard is not supported"

This has something to do with US video format I guess. It seems that in US is NTSC and I am in Netherlands Europe where the standard format is PAL.

Is there any work around to this problem otherwise I made a big mistake.

Also I thought that Sony made the PS3 region free

Most PS3 games are region-free but the BluRay player is not so movie DVDs are affected by the difference in broadcast format between NTSC and PAL
Annoyingly for you a European PAL PS3 will cope with playback of an NTSC DVD if the region code matches. By the US machines won't do this the other way around.
The xbox 360 HD drive is region-free though.

Afraid there's no workaround :(

So this mean that if I buy US movie I can play them?

Two question please:
1) The issue so far happened with normal DVD movie and not blue ray because I haven't tried yet.
Do you think that a blue ray movie will give me the same error?
2) If I buy movie in NTSC format they will work isn't? So...there is a possibility to download American movie directly to the PS3 HDD and watch them? I am new with PS3 this my first one. If yes how using the internet or from the PS3 store. I created an account in the Netherlands region so maybe even if I can download movies they will be still in PAL format

I mean I am upset because I bought the PS3 in eBay trying to saving some money and now I cannot watch movies that was my main purpose

Yes if the screen you've connected to can play NTSC - I'm assuming it can (or you're running it as HD) otherwise you'ld have noticed that by now.
Downloads from the European stores will be in PAL (E)
This is part of the reason that US PS3's turn up on auction sites at such apparently attractive prices

So blue ray movie are also in PAL (E)?

If I buy blue ray here at local shop will also not work? I am only trying some DVD (Dutch) but I didn't try a blue ray movie?

Any Idea where I can buy American movie online I cannot re-sell this PS3 I loose money and so on.

I also found forum that some European movie in blue ray are not PAL (E) and they can be played on US PS3 please read that:

Below a part of your first reply:

Unfortunately what stated above is not exactly correct because what is not compatible is just normal DVD movie because here in Europe are PAL (E)

The BluRay Disk can be played as normal because what account is the resolution 1080 and there is no PAL restrictions that will affect this.

I tested yesterday and is all good now including games

Anything played in HD avoids the PAL/NTSC problem
In my answer "Movie DVD's" and "Bluray disks" are considered separately (a Bluray disk isn't a DVD)
However the Bluray player is the issue because it region limits DVDs

Hope that's clear now :)
